Abstract
Borderline ovarian tumors are a low-grade from of ovarian malignancy with significantly less aggressive behavior than epithelial ovarian carcinoma, Twenty-nine patients underwent primary surgery for borderline ovarian tumors at the Asan Medical
Center
between 1989 and 1995. These patients were retrospectively analyzed for clinical features, treatments, serum CA-125 level, and survival characteristics.
1. The average age of the patients with borderline ovarian tumor was twenty-eight. There was no differance of age distribution between serous and mucinous cell types.
2. The symptoms and signs of patients with borderline ovarian tumor were palpable lower abdominal mass, lower abdominal pain, and abdominal distension. There was no specific symptom in 24% of the patients.
3. Mucinous cell type of borderline ovarian tumor was more frequent(62.1%), and stage II and III disease was 3.4%, 6.8% respectively. There was no case of stage IV.
4. Stage I borderline ovarian tumor comprised major proportion(89.6%), and stage II and III disease was 3.4%, 6.8% respectively. There was no case of stage IV.
5. In the 29 cases of borderline ovarian tumor, 16 cases were managed by conservative operation. There was no recurrent case.
6. Preoperative elevation of serum CA-125 level in borderline ovarian tumors was 57.9% in stage I, and 66.6% in stage II and III. There was no statistical significance. Preoperative elevation of serum CA-125 level according to histological type
was
62.5% in mucinous type and 60.0% in serous type. There was no statistical significance.
7. The average size of mucinous borderline ovarian tumors was 14.2 cm, which was larger than that of serous type(9.6 cm). There was statistical significance.
